Hello plant sisters,
I’ve been meaning to write this for quite some time, but I really wanted a clear mind and head space to do so, to fully capture what I want to share.
In this blog post, I’ll be sharing my experience with plant medicine and some simple ways you can create and incorporate plant medicine into your life!
This is a very special post for me, because it is something I connect with so much and something very close to my heart.
For the last couple of years, I’ve been diving more and more deep into plant medicine by taking herbs, focusing on super foods, using essential oils and consuming tea. However, I wasn’t aware of the spiritual power and wisdom plants have until recently. (Which made me feel kind of ignorant, to be honest). But then again, it feels like SO much of ancient wisdom has been buried, that we aren’t that exposed to it. At least in this modern society we live in.
My experience with plant energy:
Within the past year, I’ve been filling my house and garden with new plants. And as I started taking care of them, I started to acknowledge their presence. The more I did this, what started to happen, is I would deeply feel them. For example, when new leaves were growing and they were thriving I felt at ease and a huge sense of joy, and when they were droopy or needed attention I would feel a sense of uneasiness and as if my attention was being pulled to them constantly. I should mention I’m an empath, and because of that I tend to be really sensitive to people’s energies and feel deeply what they feel, but I didn’t know this was possible with plants. At first, I went with it, and then I started mentioning to some friends because it was almost as this awareness and their “voice” was becoming “louder”.
I wasn’t hearing things, it wasn’t like that. It was mostly a strong pull and feeling within myself that I resonated with something external. In this case, a plant.
I wasn’t sure what to do with this, so I started just expressing my gratitude mentally and sometimes vocally to the plants around me. In return I would feel waves of love and gratitude bounce back and it was beautiful!
Plants are energetic living organisms. You know, everything is energy, so it makes total sense that they have vibrations and that their energetic fields can interact with ours. Have we just forgotten that? Us humans, we have a 6th sense to feel (to see what our other senses can’t process for us) However in this world full of constant distractions, when do we ever have a clear mind to allow ourselves to be aware of this? When do we ever stop and listen?
I began to crave a deeper connection with plants. I was so intrigued already by their healing properties, but at this point I felt there was something deeper they had to share. I read a book that said to sit my a tree and as the tree if you can feel it’s aura. The book said once you ask you should feel a response.
I’ll be honest. I tried this and had a really hard time feeling comfortable with this. I couldn’t get my mind to quiet down and then I realized I had a feeling of urgency that was limiting this connection.
As this was all happening I heard about a medicinal plant workshop that was happening locally and I felt extremely called to join. I thought It was going to be facts and “how-to use” information about different native plants, but I was in for a way deeper and more meaningful experience.
Before we used any of the plants in the workshop, we started by meditating with them. We would hold them, drink their tea and even rub some of the tea on our body (face, chest and hands) to help establish a connection. We would then thank them, and honor their presence and invite them to share any messages they have to share with us. It was 100% receptive mode.
This experience was something I never imagined I could feel.
Once meditating with them, you could feel their energy whether it was a masculine/feminine energy, you could FEEL their properties and what organs their served best, you could feel what Ayurvedic dosha they resonated with and you could feel a personality (Some were more dense and protective while others were motherly and nurturing and some were even more silly and joyful). And of the coolest parts of all is that It also opened up a connection to ancestry messages and a deeper connection to my higher self and spirit guides.
I was MIND BLOWN by the amount of wisdom these plants had to offer. They were the true teachers. and within these 12 hours they expressed their want to help guide us and heal us, and they expressed they want to be heard.
In ancient times in tribes, there was always a healer. The healer was someone the tribe would take care of greatly because he or she had this special wisdom to treat people and heal them. On these tribes, everyone honored and respected nature because nature was what supported them and kept them alive, so I truly believe these healers that worked with plants, had a lot of wisdom being passed down from the plants and a lot of direction in terms of healing others.
And I just want to point out, you don’t have to be “special” to have this connection with plants OR be the “called one”. Every single human has this ability, all it takes is for us to put our ego aside and sit in stillness and call for these connections.
If this is something you want to try, I recommend this: Go outside and find a place in nature or by a plant you are comfortable with. Take a deep breath, bringing yourself present to the moment and to your surroundings. Start by touching the plant or having some physical connection with it. Then close your eyes and take a couple moments to thank the plant, appreciate it, send it love. (we must always do this before we ask for things). Then once you have felt your heart full, rub your hands together until they feel warm and imagine as if through your palms, rays of love radiate outward. Face your palms to the plants. Once you have acknowledged it, close your eyes and invite the plant to bring you any messages it might have for you. This might take a couple seconds or minutes. The important this is that you are at peace and receptive. These messages might come as feelings, imprints on your imagination or sound.
Now you have tapped into your power to receive their wisdom.
The more you do this the easier it gets!
Making Medicinal Potions:
There are many things you can make with plants but today I want to share with you my favorite! Glycerites !
Glycerites are the alcohol-free version of tinctures. They are made with plants and vegetable glycerin.
Once you mix your chosen plant with vegetable glycerin, the glycerin helps to extract the constituents from the palnts so that you have the full healing benefits of the plants.
How to make plant Glycerites:
- Whatever plant you decide to use, make sure you make it into little pieces
- Then you are ready to fill your jar!
If you are using fresh plants, you want to fill a glass jar with 2/3 full of plant matter and 100% of glycerin.
This is because you always want the glycerin to be at least 75% of the liquid amount and since fresh plants have water, once the extraction happens, they will release water.
If you’re using dried plants, you will want to fill the jar 1/2 full of plant matter and add 75% glycerin and the rest water.
- Make sure to seal your jar with a tight lid and shake it a little bit
- Stick a label on the jar of the date, plant name, and location where the plant came from.
- Then, store it somewhere dark for about 4 weeks.
- After 4 weeks, you can use a cheese cloth to extract the liquid into dropper bottles and discard the plant material.
Now you have your glycerite ready! Take One dropper a day to experience the full benefits of your plants! (different plants might require different dosages, so make sure to do research before!)
Some great plants for glycerites: hibiscus, cacao, camomile, dandelion, nettle, peppermint, ginger, vitex..
The list is endless, you can make it out of a lot of plants! and you can use all parts such as the fruit, flower, leaves and roots.
I hope this was helpful! If you have any questions, feel free to ask me!!
