One more week, one more women inspiring and supporting others! The highlight of this week is Lorin. Although we only crossed paths recently, it feels like I know her for much longer. Lorin is open and independent and a loving young entrepreneur in Hawai’I. She has beautifully combined her love for the land here and the comfort she’s found in creating a positive living environment into her business. She is a great example of how we can take whatever we love in life and live it every day. I’ll let her share now her journey, struggles and piece of advice she’s gathered from experience of launching a business made of the things she loves most!
My journey all began when I found where my spirit felt at complete peace, on an island in the middle of the Pacific. Hawaii was the place where I wanted to begin my life. I left my home in Denver, Colorado when I was seventeen and moved to the North Shore of Oahu. Growing up near the mountains made me really appreciate nature in all its forms, but I decided I needed an environment shift.
This past year I decided that I wanted to create something that resembles all the things that influence me and the community where I live. I created Earthly Mana, an online blog and store, to influence and inspire others to live an organic lifestyle; wither it be through food, travel, or their environment. Earthly Mana is mostly an online store where you can find crystals, plant accessories, and wall art.
Hawaii has become such a back bone for me and has taught me the importance of community and the environment in which we live everyday. Realizing where I felt most at home helped motivate me to create Earthly Mana because I fell in such a deep love for the land that surrounds me. I believe your environment directly reflects your mental stability and helps create an equilibrium in your head space. Your environment includes the nature that surrounds you, your household, and the people that surround you.
My home environment has become my happy place because it resembles everything I love; plants, simplicity, photos, and art. Earthly Mana was inspired completely by my own home and every item listed in my store is scattered somewhere in my house.
It was important to me to live in a place where I feel completely myself and at home, and, for some reason, plants and crystals did that for me.
The biggest challenge for opening the store was putting the time to research where my products were coming from and design a style I liked for my website. It was important for me to find products that were coming from an environmentally friendly manufacturer who fairly pays their employees. Everything Earthly Mana comes from independent manufactures around the world who help small business owners get merchandise for their stores and everything I use for wrapping, packaging, and labeling is used on recycled materials.
This process is still so new to me, so I am still overcoming many obstacles and learning many new things.
I think starting a small business can cause a lot of turmoil on a person when it comes to promoting your business and keeping it alive. It’s critical to maintain a positive mindset and to give yourself a break if it isn’t making as many sales as you expected.
Every business starts small and grows from there. If you’re not giving yourself room for growth, there becomes more room for disappointment.
Fear is always present somewhere in the back of my mind. Fear of failure is something that will get to me every once in a while; however, keeping a positive mindset and knowing that my business was an investment for my future and for my own personal growth has helped me surpass any negative thoughts or feelings about the company. No matter the outcome, the only thing that really matters is the experience and how much knowledge you gained from it.
Being a student and small business owner, vulnerability is also something that arises in my daily life. Most of my business and marketing comes from Instagram and, with that, there is a lot of pressure to keep up your ratings or your viewings high. For me vulnerability stems from competition, which is something everyone has to deal with in one way or another. The best way for me to deal with competition is to stay away from it. Comparing my business to another business is great for coming up with ideas, however, it is also a great way to feel disappointed or vulnerable in something I’ve put a lot of time and love into. Not comparing myself or my business to others keep Earthly Mana original and unique.
If I could give any advice to someone who is young and trying to start their own business, I would say use your resources wisely; whether it be getting a small business loan, barrowing money from your family, or researching companies that you want to collaborate with, you need to know everything there is to know about where you are getting money from, who it is you are collaborating with, and who you are buying your products from. The more you know about your business, the more likely you’ll be successful and the easier it will be for you to answer questions about it. The most important piece of advice I could give is to create something that you are passionate about and put all your energy into it.
Channel all the things that make you happy and put it into something that you will be proud of. It doesn’t matter how old you are, what you studied in school, or what others think of your ideas. If your motivated to create something, then do it and make it great. No matter if you win or lose, you can always take the knowledge and experience from it.
Intuition also plays a crucial role in any decision making for me. Most of my ideas stem from intuition and most of the motivation I’ve had to actually create these ideas stem from intuition. Getting the ideas is the easy part, the hard part is staying motivated and holding yourself accountable. Setting deadlines, doing daily checkups on sales, and continuing to update the website with more content is important to hold yourself accountable and keep the goals you’ve made for yourself at arm’s reach.
For all the girls who are ready to create their authentic life, don’t forget the reasoning behind your actions. Remember why you’re doing what you’re doing and don’t lose sight of what it is you want in this life. Know that you are capable of doing whatever it is you want to do and be confident that you will be successful. Setting your limit high is never a bad idea.
